The screening, a tribute to the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), is heralding the 33rd National Meeting of the Colombian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, to be held from September 27 through 29.
One of the films in roster is Late Rigoberto Lopez’s “El Mayor” (The Major, 2021), inspired by the life of Cuban independence patriot Ignacio Agramonte.
“Inocencia” (Innocence, 2018), directed by Alejandro Gil, recounts the19th century events that led to the shooting at the firing squad of eight Cuban medical students, who were allegedly guilty of scratching the tomb of an Spanish writer, as well as the subsequent investigation that Fermin Valdes Dominguez conducted to prove their innocence.
Other films are “El hombre de Maisinicu” (The Man from Maisinicu, 1973), by Manuel Perez, based on real events in early 1960s Cuba, and “Memorias del Subdesarrollo” (Memories of Underdevelopment, 1968), an all-time classic by late Tomas Gutierrez Alea.
“En nombre de la esperanza” (In the Name of Hope), by Ivan Gutierrez Nuñez will be screened in the cultural center. It revisits late leader Fidel Castro’s first visit to the United States after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Ied/iff/oda/ifs
