Eight Scientific Forum on Museum Studies and Society opens in Cuba

Matanzas, Cuba, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) The Eighth Scientific Conference on Museum Studies and Society began today in the Cuban province of Matanzas, featuring a conference on the incidence of educational heritage in museums, as part of the event lasting through the 26th.

According to the director of the Provincial Heritage Center Justa Cantillo, the evolution of museum studies as a science has been marked by great challenges leading to a number transformations in the way the public interacts with the museum.

Cantillo said that all the changes museums have undergone along with mankind have transformed them into more democratic, dynamic, interactive and inclusive spaces that allow visitors to see their expectations met, an aspect in debate in this event.

Master of Sciences Gricell Santana pointed out that besides interacting, the public should be encouraged to get rid of the mental framework that museums are spaces where pieces of certain value are stored but cannot be touched.

The main challenge for institutions today is to bring the public closer in a transformative and accessible way, so as to generate debate and healthy confrontation, he said.

The curator’s office in the city of Matanzas will become for three days the epicenter of the Scientific Conference, attended by more than 100 representatives from Mexico and 13 provinces of Cuba.
