Bolivia resorts to subsidies to offset price hikes

La Paz, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) Bolivia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance is implementing eight measures to counter the effects of recent price increases of basic staples.

An institutional note published in the Ministry’s social media points out this is one way for the Government to deal with economic sabotage and external inflationary pressures.

Subsidies will benefit fuel, food (wheat, corn and rice), land irrigation and upgrading of technical programs, among others in the productive sector.

Also included are projects to support and promote production, neighborhood fairs of the Food Production Support Company (Emapa) and the so-called “From the field to the pot” fairs, which sell basic consumer goods.

Adding to such measures are control of prices and of fair weight in supply centers, as well as anti-smuggling and anti-speculative mechanisms, bolstered by a stricter monitoring of national borders.

Backed by the Government, Emapa keeps an eye on the prices of such household products as chicken meat, eggs, milk, flour and the so-called “battle bread”, among others.

Vice-Minister of Agricultural Development, Álvaro Mollinedo, said that the “Del campo a la olla” fairs, where customers can purchase items without intermediaries, are a success in the face of speculation.

He added that these commercial events offer a variety of vegetables, tubers, meat (chicken and llama), fish, dairy products and cereals.
