The president arrived the day before in the U.S. city to participate in the high-level segment of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, and according to diplomatic sources, will speak this Monday at the Summit of the Future, which began on Sunday and is attended by several world leaders.
On that day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres hailed the new opportunities opened up by the consensus approval of the Pact for the Future, in particular to rescue multilateralism from the abyss.
“Our multilateral tools and institutions are unable to respond effectively to today’s political, economic, environmental and technological challenges and tomorrow will be even more difficult and even more dangerous,” Guterres said.
The UN high representative recognized as progress the reforms to make the Security Council more reflective of today’s world, with fairer representation of Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
He added that the Pact lays the groundwork for a more agile Peacebuilding Commission and a fundamental review of peace operations to bring them in line with the conditions they face.
