Crimea marks 60 years of Russian Society of Friendship with Cuba

Moscow, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) Students and teachers of the Crimean Pedagogical and Engineering University held a series of activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the Russian Society of Friendship with Cuba (SRAC), Prensa Latina learned today.

The celebrations were headed by the president of SRAC and deputy minister of Finance of the Russian Federation, Alexei Lavrov, who said that the celebrations cover all the country, with Crimea being one of the main sites, where the organization is very active, given historical ties with Cuba.

Lavrov indicated the commemoration is aimed at bringing the two peoples closer together.

Vice-Governor of the Republic of Crimea and President of the SRAC in this autonomous territory within the Federation, Irina Kiviko, highlighted that as part of the event there was a panel with students and teachers, dedicated to the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) for the independence of Cuba.

Kiviko also recalled that in 1961, just two years after the victory of the Cuban Revolution, more than 400 Cuban arrived in Crimea as students.

The young Cubans studied in the city of Dzhankoy , as they sought to specialize in farming, machinery and cattle breeding.

As part of the celebration, a jazz orchestra played a medley of Latin American songs, followed by a rendition by a violin ensemble and an exhibition of Cuba-themed posters and paintings, ending with an evening show by university students.

“We are working to establish connections between the universities of Crimea and Cuba and we consider it necessary to strengthen as much as possible the links between research centers and educational institutions,” Kivikov said.

The president of the SRAC and vice-governor invited local companies to participate in the 40th exhibition of the Havana Fair (FIHAV 2024), which will be held in early November.
