Catrain did not rule out variations to the proposal presented by the Executive Power last month, although he affirmed there is consensus on most of the issues.

The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) welcomed the idea of eliminating only 20 seats from the Chamber of Deputies, instead of 53, as proposed by President Luis Abinader in his reform plan.

The political leader assured this reduction in the number of deputies seeks to improve public revenues and make a more efficient use of resources.

The reform contemplates four basic points aimed at guaranteeing constitutional stability with respect to presidential election rules to prevent future modifications that would allow governing for more than two consecutive terms.

It also seeks the autonomy of the Public Ministry, to unify the holding of presidential, congressional and municipal elections, and to adjust the number of representatives in the Chamber of Deputies.

Although the PRM has an ample majority in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, which allows it to sanction any bill, two weeks ago the spokesman of the People’s Force (FP), Omar Fernandez, did not rule out that his group would present a report to demonstrate that the changes to the Magna Carta ‘are unnecessary and empty’, which has not happened until today.
