Lagos denounced that, according to international and humanitarian laws, the US blockade imposed on Cuba is a crime against humanity and to an entire nation.
The Chilean communist leader offered statements to the Crónica Digital newspaper after the President of the United States, Joe Biden, decided to extend the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917 for one more year, under which the blockade on Cuba was imposed on the February 3rd, 1962. “This is a unilateral, arbitrary and criminal measure. There is no justification to punish a people who chose their freedom and independence,” Lagos stressed.
Based on the most recent report presented by the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, between March 1st, 2023 and February 29th, 2024 alone, this unfair policy caused damages estimated at more than five billion dollars. This number represents an increase of 189.8 million dollars compared to that reported last year.
