Cyber-attack warning prompts police raid in Ecuador

Quito, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador's National Police, with the support from troops and prosecutors from five countries, unleashed today a mega-operation in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, following cyber-attack alerts.

According to police, they had been warned of possible phishing, a type of cyber-attack committed via fake emails, text messages, phone calls or websites, to trick people into sharing confidential data or exposing themselves to cyber-crime.

Two people were arrested in the operation performed by law enforcement agencies from Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru.

They also uncovered a Binance platform account, where cryptocurrencies and virtual wallets were traded, as well as a digital platform for unlocking phones.

The National Police here told citizens that when launching such attacks hackers pretend to be an authority or representative of a well-known brand.

They then send a message to the victim to pay a bill, open an attachment, click on a link or perform any other action that allows them to snatch data.
