Chile rules out involving the Army in the fight against insecurity

Santiago, Chile, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Chile’s President, Gabriel Boric, has momentarily ruled out involving the Armed Forces in the fight against insecurity, according to his statements made Thursday after the Military Parade for the Army Glories Day.

“The Armed Forces are not trained to be police officers, and the whole political gamut are so aware,” Boric said when asked about the possibility of the military participating in cracking down on delinquency and organized crime.

The head of State specified that the Army can provide support sometimes, as it is doing today in the control of the migratory flow in the northern border or in the southern macro zone, but that is an exception.

“We will always be attentive to the requirements, but today we are strengthening the police corps,” the president expressed.

Boric recalled that all the tools available to the institution to exercise the rule of law had been significantly improved and a project to increase their salaries will be presented by the end of 2024.

The president, along with the Minister of Defense, Maya Fernandez Allende, headed on Thursday the Military Parade 2024, a state ceremony that has been held since 1832.
