Greenhouse gases and global temperatures are breaking records, while the gap between emissions aspirations and reality remains wide, United in Science 2024 new report added.
Under current policies, the probability of global warming reaching three degrees Celsius this century is 66%, the document notes.
Nevertheless, the publication offers reasons for hope, as it analyzes the increased understanding of the Earth system thanks to advances in the natural and social sciences, new technologies and innovation.
Such progress could lead to a new paradigm in the area of climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, it said.
In this regard, WMO Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo, declared the need to take urgent and ambitious measures without delay to promote sustainable development, climate action and disaster risk reduction.
