Bogotá, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Colombia continues today the preparations for the Biodiversity Summit (COP16) which will be attended by 10 heads of state, more than 100 ministers and around 14,500 people, as reported by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, Minister Susana Muhamad confirmed the attendance of the heads of state from Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Honduras, Ghana, Suriname, Mozambique, Haiti and Guinea Bissau, as well as other high-ranking officials from Cuba and Kenya.

The Minister of Environment said that this is the first time that a summit on biodiversity will have so many countries represented and that it will also have the participation of 196 delegations from the United Nations.

In her opinion, this shows that Colombia will be the epicenter of a great global mobilization around the protection and conservation of biodiversity.

He also said that this should be translated into an impulse of all countries to have greater ambition in decision-making so that this is a COP of results that materializes in concrete and effective mechanisms for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Framework.

COP16 is not only a key event for the country this year because of its importance in environmental matters, but also the largest and most significant event that Colombia has hosted in the last 50 years, due to the large number of countries represented,” said Muhamad.

The Biodiversity Summit is the most important in the world to be held on this subject, around which more than 190 countries will discuss in Cali, in the southwest of Colombia, from October 21 to November 1.
