Women’s deaths in homicides affect Costa Rican society

San Jose, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) Crimes against Costa Rican women, serious crimes in the country, is experiencing an increase with the homicides of 52 women this year, generally there are about 600 violent deaths a year.

Teletica channel published that female deaths, including femicides, traffic crashes, and violent acts of different kinds that affect society, increased by 50 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.

Violent deaths of women are also significant in the past five years when they reached 287, many of them by murder and half of them described as femicides, the Observatory on Gender-Based Violence against Women of the Judiciary reported.

Deaths by femicides, defined as murders of women committed by men for gender reasons, include 30 in 2020, 20 in 2021, 25 in 2022, 22 in 2023, and 14 in 2024.
