Uruguay’s intention to open office in Jerusalem rejected

Montevideo, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) Ambassadors of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation rejected the Uruguayan government's intention to open an office in Jerusalem, and considered it an endorsement of the Israeli annexation policy.

A few days ago, the presidential candidate for the ruling National Party (PN), Álvaro Delgado, reiterated that Uruguay, in the coming weeks, would open an “innovation office” in that Palestinian city under Israeli occupation, despite the special status conferred by the United Nations.

In September 2022, President Luis Lacalle Pou had made this announcement in a meeting with the Zionist Organization of Uruguay.

In view of the announcement of the PN candidate, the ambassadors of Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iran, Egypt, Türkiye and Qatar expressed “their deep concern” in a letter to the Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Omar Paganini.

“We reaffirm the binding obligation to respect the special status of Jerusalem, an integral part of the occupied territory of the State of Palestine, and the need to protect and preserve the unique spiritual, religious and cultural dimensions of the city,” says the message released here.

It adds that the installation of an office of any kind “constitutes a flagrant violation of international law”.

They warned that it would amount to “endorsing Israel’s illegal annexation of the city and the war crimes it entails.”
