Pres. Noboa decrees curfew in provinces under state of emergency

Quito, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorean President, Daniel Noboa, decreed on Tuesday a curfew for six provinces and the canton Camilo Ponce Enriquez, during the national power outage that will take place on Wednesday in the country.

The measure will be applied from 22:00, local time, on Wednesday until 06:00 on Thursday.

On a press release, the Executive indicated that the Security Block “will reinforce its actions to ensure the safety of citizens and the country across the national territory, with special attention to the cantons and parishes where this suspension of freedom of transit is in force.”

On Monday, the Interior Minister, Monica Palencia, announced that the Government would apply the curfew to reduce the risk level for citizens and make them stay at home.

According to the Ecuadorean Government, the national power outage will be conducted to reinforce the transmission system and distribution networks as one way to tackle the electric crisis.

Works will be carried out from 22:00, local time, on September 18 until 06:00 the following day, according to a statement released on the social network X of the Presidency.

The energy crisis in this nation worsened in mid-April, with outages of up to 13 hours in some places, and although blackouts were officially suspended since May 1, there have been disruptions for various reasons.

Accompanying this scenario, a wave of violence and insecurity is once again hitting the nation despite the presence of the military on the streets and the repeated states of exception decreed by the Executive.
