On Monday, the Executive Power released a proposal to restructure and rationalize the public administration through the unification of at least six ministries and the removal of a dozen institutions.
This initiative seeks to promote an efficient, coherent and more aligned administration, in line with the Government’s priorities, President Luis Abinader asserted, noting that the process will begin immediately and that 80 percent of those proposals will be sent to Congress.
In that regard, former Minister of Economy Juan Ariel Jimenez described the Government’s decision as “adequate,” but warned that the “real effect for economic and fiscal purposes will be seen if these measures produce a real reduction of current spending.”
Meanwhile, the head of the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP), Eduardo Hidalgo, described the idea of merging the Ministries of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT) and Education (MINERD), as an assault on the latter’s budget, which amounts to four percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The Government explained that the recovered funds will be used in priority sectors, such as health and education.
