Kenyan road accidents have killed over 3,000 so far in 2024

Nairobi, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) Traffic accidents in Kenya from January through September 16 this year caused 3,369 dead and injured 16,979 others, the National Police Service reported today.

The Police acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli broke the fatal figures down into 1,281 pedestrians, 825 motorists, 654 passengers and 281 drivers.

After warning that traffic incidents on highways have increased compared to the first nine months of the previous year, when 3,151 deaths were reported, the officer urged drivers and the population to comply with the rules of the highway code, to avoid further loss of human lives.

To address road safety issues, the national authorities convened a consultative forum with regional traffic officers.

In Kenya, as in other African countries, road accidents are frequent due to, among other causes, the poor technical condition of roads and vehicles, and the recklessness of drivers.
