Spanish companies advocate sustainable fuels

Madrid, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) Four Spanish companies today have advocated the promotion of a new industry to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) based on multimillion-dollar investments.

In the report presented by Iberia, Iberia Express, Cepsa (Spanish Petroleum Company), Vueling and BIOCIRC (Spanish Biocircularity Association), the experts spoke out in favor of adopting a national pact between the Government and the sector, which would eventually lead to establish a national Sustainable Aviation Fuel strategy.

The production of SAF could lead to investments of more than 22 billion euros in Spain, generate 270 direct and indirect jobs and contribute some 56 billion to the GDP until 2050, according to the report.

The document also considers the construction of more than 30 SAF production plants necessary to guarantee the energy independence and decarbonisation of the Spanish Aircraft sector by 2050.

Among the 16 measures proposed by the report – the first to bring together agents from the entire value chain -, stands out the creation of an annual fund of more than 300 million euros to promote the consumption of SAF.

According to experts, SAF would allow for a reduction of up to 90 percent of CO2 emissions compared to kerosene throughout its life cycle, which would mean avoiding 14 million tons of CO2 annually in Spain by 2050.

Entitled “How to make Spain the European leader in SAF, A Roadmap to Accelerate the Decarbonisation of Air Transport”, the report points out the need to establish a regulatory framework that provides security to the agents involved, allowing them to invest in confidence.
