Ecuador’s Parliament to analyze presidential veto of Weapons Law

Quito, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) The National Assembly of Ecuador will analyze the partial veto of the Law on Weapons, Ammunition, Explosives and Related Materials, decreed by President Daniel Noboa and approved by the Legislature on August 13th.

The president proposed incorporating improvements in issues such as the implementation of a traceability system to maintain control of the entire manufacturing and production cycle of weapons, ammunition, explosives and other related materials.

The Executive introduced several articles in the veto with the objective of perfecting matters relating to weapons for military and police use, such as the Penitentiary Security and Surveillance Corps, said the Secretariat of Communication.

The measure imposed by Noboa specified the requirements that must be presented to obtain permission to possess and carry weapons by citizens, and emphasizes the prohibition of carrying weapons in educational centers.

In April 2023, then-ruler Guillermo Lasso announced three measures to combat insecurity in the country; the main one was the authorization to possess and carry weapons for civil use for personal defense.

Several organizations and social movements, as well as citizens, considered the announcement irresponsible due to the possible consequences that the decree could bring, especially in the educational field.
