United Nations announces new Special Envoy for Water

United Nations, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations announced today the appointment of former Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi as Special Envoy for Water, a position focused on promoting partnerships and efforts for the preservation of the vital liquid.

Among other functions, Marsudi will support negotiations to ensure a water secure future for all, advocating for stronger political, economic and socio-cultural cooperation at all levels, according to a press release issued here.

In addition, she will seek to enhance international exchange and synergies between various global processes in support of all water-related goals, such as Sustainable Development Goal Six of the 2030 Agenda.

The envoy will work as a high-level advocate and champion for water and sanitation issues in an effort to highlight the issue on the political agenda within and outside the United Nations.

The position also promotes the cohesion of stakeholders across the spectrum, as well as amplifying the work of the UN system and mobilizing action and financial resources to address the global water crisis.

Marsudi will assume the position from November 1 after nearly four decades of experience, which included serving as Indonesia’s foreign minister (2014-2024) and ambassador to the Netherlands (2012-2014), and Iceland and Norway (2005-2008).
