The situation is extraordinarily complicated in Sudan, a nation devastated by war with famine in more than half of the population and lack of medicines, medical personnel and infrastructure.
World Food Program (WFP) spokeswoman in Sudan, Leni Kinzli, said that although aid trucks are getting through to Darfur, transport is being hampered by flooded and muddy roads.
She added that sustained and expanded access is needed in order to scale up assistance, save lives and prevent the famine from spreading.
In Sudan, thousands of people have already died and nearly eight million have been displaced since fighting broke out between the army and paramilitaries.
Since mid-April of last year, this African nation has been plunged into an internal war, after power struggles flared up between the army chief, Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, and the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
In Sudan, where a military coup d’état occurred in 2019 and another in 2021, a conflict erupted in which thousands of civilians were killed, including some 15,000 in the West Darfur region alone.
