Poor living conditions cause deaths among refugees in DRC

Kinshasa, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) The poor living conditions in the refugee site in Nyamusasi, in the province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), caused the death of 16 people, Radio Okapi reported.

The president of the enclave, Germain Mbuna, explained that most of the victims are children who died in less than two months due to malnutrition.

The camp, located between Kasenyi and Tchomia, 60 kilometers from Bunia, in Djugu territory, is home to more than 8,500 people, mostly women and children, who fled armed attacks in the villages of Torgese, Nyamamba, Blukwa and Bule, and live in extreme poverty, he said.

Among the most pressing difficulties they face are lack of access to medical care and lack of food, as the last food aid was provided more than a year ago.

Mbuna said that due to this situation there is at least one death every three days and some women resort to prostitution in order to feed their families.
