Former President Ian Khama returns to Botswana

Gaborone, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) The former president of Botswana Ian Khama returned to his country today after almost three years of absence in which he stayed of his own free will in South Africa.

When questioned by the press, Khama explained that he arrived from South Africa driving his own car.

Today, the former president appeared before the Gaborone Magistrate’s Court to answer several charges, including illegal possession of firearms, which had led to a warrant for his arrest in 2021 while he was in South Africa.

The former president had been charged along with three others, including a former intelligence chief, a former police commissioner and a former deputy permanent secretary, on a combined total of 38 counts.

The former president is expected to return to court on November 23, Magistrate Mareledi Dipate has now granted Khama an interim bail order.about a month after the country’s upcoming presidential elections, in which President Mokgweetsi Masisi is running for re-election as head of the ruling Democratic Party.

Commenting on Khama’s return, his lawyer, Unoda Mack, assured that the former president “will be in the country as long as he wants.”
