Cuba stresses at international forum importance of promoting culture

St. Petersburg, Russia, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) Promoting culture as a universal asset is a bet on a fairer and inclusive world, Cuban Culture Minister Alpidio Alonso stressed at the plenary session of the 10th St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum on Friday.

Under the slogan “21st Century Culture: Sovereignty or Globalism?”, the Cuban minister stated that the challenges currently facing humanity are enormous, as Prensa Latina verified.

Alonso stressed that if we want to strengthen the role of culture in building peace, then unilateral coercive measures that violate international law must disappear.

The minister also pointed out that the identities are currently threatened by the hegemony of the colonizing cultural industry, which produces and distributes 80 percent of content and controls two-thirds of Internet traffic.

He stated that most of the planet’s population rejects the notions of a unipolar world and a hegemonic culture, both contrary to a true culture of peace.

Alonso noted that Cuba, overcoming the complex situation resulting from the US blockade and the hostile campaign, continues to guarantee its people full access to cultural goods and services, and the right to participate in artistic and literary activities.
