Argentine Senate rejected decree on intelligence funds

Buenos Aires, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Senate today rejected a decree by President Javier Milei to grant 100 billion pesos (more than 100 million dollars) in reserved expenses to the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE).

With 49 negative votes, 11 affirmative votes and two abstentions, the Upper House of Congress discarded the recourse of necessity and urgency (DNU) 656/2024, just as the deputies did in August.

According to local press media, this is the first time in the last few years that the legislators have annulled such recourse.

Last July, the Government announced the dissolution of the Federal Intelligence Agency, after seven months of intervening it, and informed that it was replaced by the SIDE, which reports directly to the head of State and has operational control of four agencies created ‘with the purpose of transforming and modernizing the system’.

The SIDE is headed by Sergio Neiffert and the Argentine Intelligence Service, the National Security Agency, the Federal Cybersecurity Agency and the Internal Affairs Division report to it.

They veto an increase in pensions and threaten to revoke university funding, but they want to sustain the 100 billion of the SIDE. No. There are institutional limits that the President has to respect.

That is why we reject the DNU, asserted Senator Juliana di Tullio of Unión por la Patria (UP).
