The Niger Press Agency (ANP) reports Thursday that the Secretary General of the local government of Tahoua, Yacouba Soukeyradjou, highlighted the seriousness of the situation in the villages of Bouza, Konni and Madaoua, in the center of the country.
Medical sources specify that the epidemic was confirmed last Friday at a health center in Bouza, which had been alerted to the existence of a cholera outbreak in the locality.
The ANP further reported that fumigation of homes, mosques, water tanks, streams and wells has already begun to stop the spread of the disease.
The epidemic has been triggered by particularly heavy rains in this part of the Niger. Health authorities remind that cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacillus Vibrio cholerae, which can cause death within hours if not properly treated.
