A week before, the senators had given their approval.
Once enacted, the legislation introduces in the Penal Code the crime of illegal enrichment of public functionaries.
The bill consists of a single article and establishes penalties ranging from 18 months to six years imprisonment.
It also establishes heavy fines and disqualification from two to five years for those who obtain “unduly through their function or by the illicit administration of public funds” a “significant and unjustified” patrimonial increase.
National Party deputy Juan Andrés Ramírez, who argued in favor of the bill, stated that the initiative “fills an important criminal void”, and sends a message against corruption.
