Court decrees probation for ex-presidential custody chief in Uruguay

Montevideo, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan courts on Thursday granted probation to former head of presidential custody of Uruguay, Alejandro Astesiano, who is serving a prison sentence for several crimes.

Announcing the decision, Judge Noelia Gutierrez pointed out that the technical report highlights that the “convict has observed good conduct, lacks disciplinary sanctions and engages in activities to redeem his sentence.”

The judge states that the former chief of security of President Luis Lacalle Pou meets all the “requirements foreseen” in the Code of Criminal Procedure “to grant him the early release by virtue of favorable reinsertion into society.”

The Prosecutor’s Office has, once notified, six days to appeal the judicial ruling.

Astesiano was sentenced in February 2023 to four and a half years in prison, after a brief agreement with the then prosecutor Gabriela Fossati, for criminal association, influence peddling, disclosure of secrets and combination of public and private interests.

Many of these crimes were committed from the offices of the Executive Tower, headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic.
