Colombian President to tour Amazon departments

Bogota, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro accompanied by members of his cabinet, will start Thursday a tour of the southern departments of Caqueta and Guaviare, where he will reveal plans to protect ecosystems.

The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development detailed in a statement that the tour of the nation’s Amazon will consolidate the Government’s bets on containing deforestation and granting territorial rights to the communities.

According to the head of that Ministry, Susana Muhamad, during the three-day tour new measures will be announced that favor the consolidation of territorial rights for the communities, and other related to the issuance of new decrees that will allow progress in the development of the forestry economy and biodiversity.

“We will also sign very valuable agreements with communities committed to the protection of the Amazon rainforest. With this tour we reiterate our commitment to the communities that say no to deforestation,” the president revealed.

The Conservar Paga (Conserving Pays Off) program, an initiative by the Ministry of Environment to curb deforestation, by means of tripling incentives for communities that effectively engage in protection and conservation of the Amazon rainforests, will be one of the main features in this tour, the press release further pointed out.

The tour is part of a series of actions in which the Colombian government is engaging prior to the celebration of the Biodiversity Summit (COP16), the most important event of its kind, to be held from October 21 to November 1, in Cali, in the southwest of the country.
