According to the Foreign Ministry, the head of that portfolio, Wang Yi, confirmed Xi’s participation during a meeting in St. Petersburg with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin had previously indicated that he was expecting the arrival of his Chinese counterpart at the Brics summit; the two leaders have met on multiple occasions over the years, as a symbol of the good relations between Beijing and Moscow.
Initially formed by four members (Brazil, China, India and Russia) in 2009, the Brics bloc was expanded in 2010 with the accession of South Africa, and this year expanded with the inclusion of other countries such as Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
Turkïye announced earlier this month that it had also submitted an application to join the bloc.
