Oaxaca, Tabasco, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, Nayarit, Colima, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Yucatan, Morelos, Durango, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Campeche, Sinaloa, and Guerrero were among the states that approved the proposal, La Jornada newspaper informed.
In most of the legislatures where the minute was discussed, there were protests by members of the judiciary and even riots in some states, such as Puebla, Baja California, Yucatan, and Colima, in which at least two people were injured and an equal number was arrested.
Authorities announced that the proposal aims to end corruption and influence peddling that permeates that autonomous power and has allowed the release of criminals and other irregularities, a denunciation with which most citizens agree, the surveys stated.
The initiative includes, among other things, electing judges, magistrates, and ministers by popular vote as of 2025, creating a Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal as an authority independent of the Supreme Court, and the salaries of government officials will not exceed that of the President of the Republic.
