Strike paralyzes Kenya’s main airport

Nairobi, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) A strike by airport workers paralyzed today Kenya's main airport, in protest against a government plan to lease it for 30 years to a foreign company.

According to government sources, the air terminal would be leased to the Indian multinational Adani Group in a construction and operation agreement to renovate the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, with a new runway and an additional terminal.

For its part, the Kenya Airport Workers Union says the deal would lead to the loss of jobs and terms of service.

Meanwhile, Kenya Airways announced Wednesday flight delays and possible cancellations.

The strike, announced several weeks ago, was halted pending negotiations with the Kenyan government, but so far no agreement has been reached between the parties.

The strike began two days after the Nairobi High Court last Monday temporarily suspended the government’s $1.85 billion leasing plan.
