President of Cuba remembers Salvador Allende 51 years after his death

Havana, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today recalled Salvador Allende, on the 51st anniversary of his death, as a result of the coup d'état against the Popular Unity government in Chile.

We remember today the dignified and courageous Constitutional President of #Chile, Salvador Allende, whose “gesture of incomparable greatness, plunged Pinochet and his accomplices forever in ignominy,” as Fidel sentenced, Diaz-Canel wrote on the social network X.

Cuba pays heartfelt and permanent homage to his immortal legacy, he added.

On September 11, 1973, the Chilean army, commanded by Augusto Pinochet, bombed La Moneda Palace (seat of government) and other buildings and overthrew President Salvador Allende.

The surgeon and politician had won the elections of September 4, 1970 as the candidate of the Popular Unity, a coalition made up of leftist groups, including the Socialist and Communist parties and the Unitary Popular Action Movement (MAPU).

During the thousand days of Allende’s government, important transformations were carried out in the country, such as the nationalization of copper, the deepening of the agrarian reform, the half liter of milk per day to eliminate child malnutrition and the universalization of health care.

The military uprising gave way to a 17-year dictatorship, during which more than 40,000 crimes against humanity were committed, including torture, assassinations and disappearances.
