Medical supplies sent to DRC province to confront Mpox

Kinshasa, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) The province of North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), received a supply of five tons of medicines and kits to address the Mpox epidemic, Radio Okapi reported today.

The consignment, intended to intensify the treatment of cases of the disease, benefits one of the territories most affected by the conflict with armed groups and with a great number of camps for displaced people, where the risk of contracting the disease is high.

The military governor, Peter Cirimwami, said these resources are urgently needed in the province, where eight of the 34 health zones are affected by Mpox, and where they have to protect three million refugees living in difficult conditions.

The chief physician of the North Kivu Provincial Health Division, Dr. Gaston Lubambo, urged the population to comply with preventive measures, a key link to avoid the spread of the disease.

The DRC received the previous day 15,000 doses of vaccine against Mpox, a batch donated by Bavarian Nordic, in addition to last week’s shipment of 215,000 doses donated by the European Union.

The country is the epicenter of the global outbreak of the disease, with approximately 94 percent of all reported cases and 99 percent of the related deaths.
