That year the suicide rate was 21.39 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data from the Department of Vital Statistics of the Ministry of Public Health, reported by Grupo R Multimedio.
Compared to 2022, the number of suicides was reduced by 60 cases, the publication detailed.
It adds that historically, the mortality rate from this cause is higher among men, who accounted for 75% of the total in 2023.
The rate is also higher in people aged 75-79 years, followed by those aged 85-90 years. The third place was occupied by the 25-29 bracket with 32,5 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants.
According to the source, the main obstacles to suicide prevention in the region include weak surveillance systems, lack of national strategies and low coverage of mental health services, among others.
