Forests fires prompt school closures in Paraguay

Asuncion, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) Paraguay's Minister of Education and Science, Luis Ramirez, today reported a halt in classes in six schools in the departments of Alto Paraguay and Boqueron, due to the proximity of forest fires in the Chaco.

“It is important to point out that we are talking about recommendations, school activities are not suspended, but visibility in the area is very reduced due to the fires’, he said.

The secretary of state said that the changes in school schedule stem from the poor quality of the air, but also because of the risks involved for the mobility of children.

“It’s dangerous for kids to walk to school, because you have no visibility at all,’ he said. The suspension of on-site classes applies to some 316 students in six schools.

From now, weather conditions will be under daily scrutiny before classes are resumed.

Outdoor activities and physical education are also prohibited until the harmful effects of the smoke coming from the Chaco area disappear.

Several teams are working tirelessly to stop the spread of the fire, said the firefighters Department in a communiqué on social networks. Ied/abo/ro/adr
