Brazilian humanitarian mission to help put out fires in Bolivia

Brasilia, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) A mission integrated by 37 agents of the National Security Force and 25 of the Military Fire Brigade of the Federal District will combat wildfires on the border with Bolivia, Agencia Brasil confirmed on Monday.

The outlet detailed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating the work, which will be led by a disaster specialist from the Integration and Regional Development Ministry.

The wildfires in the border strip threaten to reach the Brazilian Marshlands, so this mission aims both at aiding Bolivia counter the fire in its territory and to prevent new outbreaks from reaching Brazil, the source highlighted.

Overflights and analysis of satellite maps are planned to identify outbreaks on the Bolivian border with Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, the Brazilian states that are home to the Pantanal biome.

The plan is to establish a joint command headquartered in the town of San Ignacio de Velasco, in the Bolivian department of Santa Cruz, some 315 km from the border.

In recent weeks, at least 112 wildfires have been identified in the region and 71 outbreaks have been extinguished so far.
