Warnock made the comments after the school tragedy recorded last Wednesday at a school in that state, where a 14-year-old teenager opened fire with an AR 15 rifle, killing four people (two students and two teachers); in addition, injuring nine others.
“And we Americans, have to ask ourselves, why is this still happening here?” said the legislator on CNN’s State of the Union program.
Warnock reacted to recent statements by Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, who at a rally referred to shootings as “a fact of life” and called for greater security in schools.
He warned that he will continue to push for gun control laws and although many citizens of the country want it, “they can’t even have a debate on it in the Senate.”
The senator was in Winder on Friday, where he spoke with the family of Christian Angulo, 14, one of the deceased.
In the United States, the population between one and 19 years old dies from firearms more than from any other cause. A 2022 study revealed that here there were 36.4 deaths per million people in the segment between one and 19 years old; in Canada, 6.2 per million; in Australia, 1.6 per million; and in the United Kingdom, 0.5 per million.
