Uruguay’s Broad Front prioritizes combating child poverty

Montevideo, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) Fighting off child poverty is currently a priority for the opposition Broad Front (FA), which seeks to win in the October elections and return to power in Uruguay.

Blanca Rodriguez, who is on the race for senator said so at the launching ceremony of 609 list of the Popular Participation Movement, led by former President Jose Mujica who belongs to FA as well.

It was Rodriguez’s first public speech as a politician, after over 30 years in front of the cameras as host of a TV news program.

“We have a huge debt with children in Uruguay. We are the country with the highest level of child poverty in the region,” she assertesd at the campaign rally.

Children have to become the focus of our efforts because in our country they are poorer than society in general, because we have become a very unequal country, she remarked.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics indicate that 20 percent of children under six years old live in poverty.

Rodriguez expressed to be “tremendously hopeful” about the national elections scheduled for October 27, and stressed that public security will be another priority for the left-wing coalition.

The candidate to be senator thanked Jose Mujica, by saying “he was the key to convince me, to make me enthusiastic to commit myself to this proposal”.

Mujica underwent surgery on Friday as physicians place him a tube that will allow liquid feeding directly to the stomach to alleviate the sequels in the esophagus caused by radiotherapy sessions against cancer.
