Panamanians spend half of their wages on food

Panama City, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (ACODECO) granted on Sunday that Panamanians spend half of their wages on food, increasingly expensive.

The study revealed that the basic family food basket stood at US$ 334.54 in July, with average salaries of US$ 536.80.

The statistics showed that each person earning minimum wage must spend an average of 52.53 percent of income on the purchase of some basic food, not including household cleaning and personal care products, among others, which are not accounted for by ACODECO.

Neither are the basic services of water, electricity, transportation, internet and others that each family has in its monthly spending budget.

Consumer prices of food, according to the National Statistics Institute (INEC), barely registered an inter-annual variation of 1.1 in July, 2024, but experts broke prices down, they noticed vegetable and beef are among the highest. INEC’s specialists further pointed out milk and fruits as food items with higher prices.

Other items with surges in the consumer price index were sugar, yogurt, cereals, ice cream and juices.
