Mexican Senate begins discussion of judicial reform

Mexico City, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The joint commissions of Constitutional Affairs and Legislative Studies of the Mexican Senate began today the discussion of the draft opinion of the judicial reform.

The 38 members managed to enter the premises of Reforma and Insurgentes, in this capital, without problems, despite the demonstration that is taking place outside that legislative headquarters, reports newspaper La Jornada.

During the discussion, the positions of Morena and the opposition will be confronted, which comes with the idea of reserving all the articles.

The president of the Constitutional Affairs Commission, Morena senator Citlalli Hernández, commented the draft opinion to be discussed does not include any additional modification to the one made in the Chamber of Deputies.

In addition to considering the changes, even those proposed by the judiciary, any modification would imply that the bill returns to the Chamber of Deputies.

She made it clear they respect the protesters, but the legislators of Morena and allies have the mandate of the population to carry out this reform to the judiciary.

Senator Hernández Mora commented she hopes that those who are in the sit-in outside the chamber following the debate, have a complete vision of what the reform means.

Separately, the coordinator of the National Action Party (PAN), Guadalupe Murguía, said they will remain firm and they will not give Morena the vote it lacks to achieve the qualified majority.

She clarified that the versions that Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes could be the one who will vote in favor of this reform are false.

At the beginning of the session, PAN Senator Mayuli Latifa Martínez stressed that she and her colleagues are attending the meeting “under caution,” since there is a mandate from two judges not to rule on the constitutional amendment regarding the judicial power.

The 38 senators, members of both drafting committees, took a roll call. None of them missed the meeting.

The session is expected to last several hours, since it was agreed that the draft ruling will be discussed in general and in particular, and only the PAN has announced that it will reserve all the articles of the ruling.
