Costa Rican film to compete for Oscar and Goya awards for Best Film

San Jose, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) A sample of today’s Costa Rican cinema, Memories of a Burning Body, will represent the country at the Oscar Awards in the United States and the Goya Awards in Spain, in the category of Best Film, local media reported.

The film, the second film by director Antonella Sudasassi Furniss, delves into the subject of female sexuality at different stages of life, already addressed in her first film The Awakening of the Ants, also nominated for the Goya, added the newspaper Delfino.cr.

Memories of a Burning Body, co-produced by the Costa Rican company Substance Films and the Spanish company PlayLab Films, won the audience award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), the publication recalled.

The film, shot entirely in Costa Rica with post-production in Spain, was used as an educational and reflective tool at events such as the one organized by the UN Population Fund in the country for World Sexual Health Day, the source added.

Memorias de un cuerpo que arde, starring Sol Carballo, Paulina Bernini and Juliana Filloy, and released this August in Costa Rica, has been well received by specialists and film events inside and outside the country, Delfino.cr noted.

According to the newspaper, its path to the Oscar and Goya awards represents not only a milestone for the director and her work, but also a platform to make visible essential issues in the lives of women in any nation, “from an authentic and honest perspective.”

Cultural media in the country value the cinematography of director Antonella Sudasassi as one of the most important in the region.
