Ecuador’s electoral body clears coalitions ahead of 2025 polls

Quito, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador’s National Electoral Council (CNE) approved on Friday the coalition made up by the political movements Citizen Revolution (RC) and Total Renovation (RETO), with a view to the 2025 general elections.

This is the only national alliance registered on August 30 before the electoral body.

The RC had chosen Luisa Gonzalez and Diego Borja as its pre-candidates to the presidency and vice presidency, respectively.

RETO, on the other hand, submitted Guayaquil’s entrepreneur, Eduardo Sanchez, and Katya Caicedo. There’s been no announcement so far, however, on how would the duo finally conform after the political pact between both forces was sealed.

Likewise, the Electoral Council endorsed the request to unify in a single body the Social Christian Party (PSC) with the CREO movement and with Friend for the Latin America, Caribbean and Africa Constituency. Accordingly, the three groups will only be allowed to present joint lists of candidates for deputies abroad, the CNE pointed out on a press release.

Once the phase of coalitions be completed, the CNE will verify the documentation submitted, so that from September 13 to October 2 candidates will formalize their nominations.

A total of 16 candidates could seek the presidency of Ecuador in 2025, after the closing of the deadline to formalize political coalitions before the CNE, although nominations are not yet registered.

On February 9, 2025, over 13 million citizens will attend the polls to elect their president, vice president, 151 legislators and five parliamentarians. Ied/omr/oda/nta
