The initiative, consisting of only one article, takes into account the criteria of legislators and the proposals of the opposition Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA) and the Cabildo Abierto party.
Attempts to pass this civil service legislation had failed in previous legislatures.
FA Senator Eduardo Brenta affirmed that the approval in the Upper House “gives a significant political signal to all Uruguayan citizens regarding transparency in government and public ethics.
Brenta recalled that Uruguay ratified the United Nations Convention against Corruption in November 2006.
