Reports of killings and rapes following the escape of several detainees, as well as contradictory reports about what really happened, prompted human rights organizations such as the Voice of the Voiceless (VSV) to demand a more thorough investigation.
The United Nations Joint Human Rights Office also stated that they would investigate the matter before making a statement, Radio Okapi reported.
VSV reminded that no pretext can justify human rights violations and said that those responsible must be held accountable.
Meanwhile, defense lawyers also demanded independent investigations, as their clients denounced the participation of armed men in the alleged massive violations, as well as the escape of several inmates supported from outside.
In the early hours of Monday, September 2, gunshots were reported for several hours in the central prison of Makala, where prisoners tried to escape from their cells.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Security, Jacquemain Shabanil, reported that the escape attempt left a provisional death toll of 129 people.
