AMLO congratulates legislators on judicial reform’s approval

Mexico City, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, congratulated Wednesday legislators after the Chamber of Deputies approved the judicial reform and assured that opponents of the initiative lack any basis to counter it.

“I congratulate the legislators who are seeking to clean the judicial power of corruption,” the president said on his usual press briefing, after the parliamentarians passed on Wednesday the bill to be sent to the Senate.

What we are talking about is that people may have the possibility of electing judges, justices and ministers, just as they elect local lawmakers, governors, senators, the president of the Republic… it is the same thing, he asserted.

Referring to those who oppose the initiative, Lopez Obrador considered that they have no moral grounds, since it is public knowledge and most Mexicans know that “corruption prevails” in those instances.

Regarding the appeals filed by judges with the purpose of preventing the discussion of the bill in Congress, the president assured that they lack validity and described their actions as “desperate interference.”

“How is a judge going to stop, on what legal basis does he stop a process in the legislative power?” the president asked, pointing out that by law it is a role of the Parliament to reform the Constitution and the Writ of Amparo cannot be applied in the event of a constitutional reform process.

“They are following a plan to hinder the public life of the country, to trigger instability. Well, no. Nothing is going to happen, nothing is happening”, because Mexico is a very conscious and politicized people, he said.

By mentioning the reasons for promoting the reform, Lopez Obrador has repeatedly noted that the judicial power is kidnapped and at the service of a rapacious minority, dominated by organized and white-collar crime.

The bill aims at terminating influence peddling, which is permeating this autonomous power and has made possible the release of criminals and other irregularities, something the majority of citizens have denounced, according to surveys.

Among other issues, the initiative contemplates the creation of a Court of Judicial Discipline as an independent authority of the Supreme Court, and establishing that the remuneration of judicial public servants cannot be higher than that of the president of the Republic.
