Although the war is over, the number of internally displaced persons in the country remains high, the UN agency in Afghanistan lamented in a statement.
The statement noted that with the end of major hostilities in the central Asian nation and the consolidation of control by the de facto authorities in August 2021, conflict is no longer the main cause of displacement.
However, 3.2 million Afghans remain displaced within the country because of war, and more than 5.82 million are registered refugees or in refugee-like situations in the region, mainly in the Islamic Republics of Iran and Pakistan, the text details.
Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration reported that last week the number of people leaving Afghanistan for Iran and Pakistan increased by 11 percent.
The organization’s report shows that nearly 65,000 people returned from Pakistan and Iran to Afghanistan last week, while more than 72,000 went to those countries.
