Kabul, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said today that Afghanistan currently has more than three million internally displaced people and nearly six million refugees in countries in the region.

Although the war ended, the number of internally displaced people in the country remains high, the UN agency in Afghanistan lamented in a statement.

The statement noted that with the end of major hostilities in Afghanistan and the consolidation of control by the de Facto authorities in August 2021, conflict is no longer the main cause of displacement.

However, 3.2 million Afghans remain displaced within the country due to the conflict and more than 5.82 million are registered refugees or in refugee-like situations in the region, mainly in the Islamic Republics of Iran and Pakistan, the text details.

Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration reported that last week the number of people leaving Afghanistan to Iran and Pakistan increased by 11 percent.

According to the organization’s figures, nearly 65,000 people returned from Pakistan and Iran to Afghanistan last week, while more than 72,000 left for those countries.
