Prosecutor admits Boluarte’s alleged guilt

Lima, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) Peru’s National Attorney, Juan Carlos Villena, confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation had found that Peruvian President Dina Boluarte had accepted jewelry in exchange for benefiting the donor, a regional governor.

In a television interview, Villena was asked if the investigation found indications of responsibility and he answered that “effectively, that is what we have exposed in our constitutional complaint” presented to Congress, which must decide whether to open a process to the president or to file the case.

The prosecutor specified that the investigations drew the conclusion that Boluarte was bribed with Rolex luxury watches and other expensive jewelry and in exchange granted benefits to the Governor of the central region of Ayacucho, Wilfredo Oscorima, with the allocation of funds for works in that territory, which the president and Oscorima deny.

A journalistic report verified months ago that the head of State wore the aforementioned garments in public, in the country and abroad, without having included them in her obligatory patrimonial declaration.

Initially, Boluarte maintained that she had bought the jewelry with her income, but since her earnings of the time could not afford her such luxury, she later maintained that she had only received them on loan from Oscorima, who supported her version, feeding the media’s suspicions.

Villena added he understands the President and the Government might have felt annoyed by the inquiry, but noted it is the Prosecutor’s Office job to investigate the criminal responsibilities and other judicial issues of high officials “and we have to do it or we would be breaching our duties.”
