Panama meeting advocates upgraded agricultural food system in LA

Panama City, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of 19 Latin American and Caribbean countries today in Panama advocated reforms in the regional agricultural food systems, aimed at guaranteeing better nutrition and access to healthy diets.

The sub-regional coordinator for Central America, Adoniram Sanches, said that this type of thematic workshops – sponsored by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO- host exchanges on inclusive public policies for the benefit of food production and distribution, especially for vulnerable sectors such as women.

Speaking to Prensa Latina , Sánchez indicated it is essential for governments to promote compliance with their legislation on food safety and devise action guidelines to foster school meals or guarantee basic daily meals, always striving to avoid obesity or overweight.

Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock of Honduras, Laura Suazo, spoke on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), as she called for greater coordination in food production and equity in access to food.

Now that her country is acting as pro tempore president of CELAC, Suazo stressed that this type of forum helps to generate policies and laws favoring the mandatory commitment of countries to guarantee food security, especially for minors, and that food is valued as a human right.

Brieuc Pont, secretary general of the Nutrition for Growth Summit, to be held in March 2025 in France, voiced his hopes that delegates come to that forum after sustainable programs have been approved in their respective countries, and highlighted that some good practices are already applied in Honduras, Costa Rica, Brazil, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador and El Salvador, among other Latin American nations.
