Santo Domingo, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican government today presented a plan that seeks efficiency in the operation of the country's electricity distribution companies (EDE), with the purpose of reducing losses by 2027 and solving the crisis in the system.

The president of the Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED), Celso Marranzini, explained there is currently an unprecedented growth in energy demand.

As a consequence, he pointed out that the distribution networks operate in overload because the energy flows exceed the capacity during peak consumption hours.

He also pointed out that the protection systems take equipment and/or circuits out of service and frequent breakdowns cause additional interruptions.

He stated that today all the provinces have energy losses (GWH per month), for which reason the Government’s purpose is to reduce them in the country’s three distribution companies by between 20 and 40 percent in the next three years.

In order to counteract this situation, Marranzini indicated that the necessary investments are being made for the replacement of equipment and the expansion of the distribution networks.

He commented that illegal connections oversize the supply of load transformers, causing frequent service outages due to breakdowns.

He revealed that there are currently more than 800,000 users connected illegally, who are neither billed nor charged.
